LaserJet 2100TN on Ubuntu 11.04

Our HP LazerJet 2100TN has proved itself to be a great reliable printer to use with Linux. For some reason Ubuntu’s automatic installation doesn’t seem to pick the correct driver which can lead to odd things happening, like printing taking ages etc.

It’s easy to fix. Browse to http://localhost:631/ which will take you to your CUPS Printing administration page, select The 2100 and Modify it. You’ll be asked to enter a user name and password, this needs to be the root account or a user with administrative privileges granted by sudo.

After you have continued through the first couple of pages you’ll be asked to choose the make and model, choose the ‘HP’ and ‘HP LaserJet 2100 hpijs’. This seems to give the best results under Ubuntu 11.04.
